Chapter 386 Security
Chapter 386 Security
Yu Yang approached the container and wiped away the sediment on the surface.
Suspended in the gel was a strangely shaped creature—it had the general outline of a human, but its skin was translucent blue, its fingers had obvious webbed structures, and its neck had openings resembling fish gills on both sides.
"Some kind of... human subspecies?" Yu Yang whispered in shock. "Was a previous civilization conducting human genetic modification experiments?"
Just then, Cheng Hai's scanner suddenly emitted a sharp alarm.
"Yu Yang! We're not the only ones here!"
Almost simultaneously, a beam of light shone from the other end of the hall.
Yu Yang instinctively hid behind the container and saw three fully armed divers appear at the entrance.
They were wearing black diving suits, and their equipment was clearly more advanced than Yu Yang's group.
"The Eye of the Deep Sea!" Cheng Hai said through gritted teeth, "How did these pirates get here?"
Yu Yang had heard of this organization—a group of radical underwater resource plunderers who specialized in stealing scientific research results and supplies from various floating cities.
Security forces in New Atlantis have clashed with them multiple times.
“They must have been following us,” Yu Yang whispered, “or they detected the same signal.”
One of the black divers raised a weapon—an underwater pulse gun.
Yu Yang knew that this weapon could generate deadly shockwaves in the water.
"The two people behind the container," a distorted voice came through the communicator, "please slowly step out and place your hands where they can be seen."
Cheng Hai looked at Yu Yang, his eyes filled with a silent question.
Yu Yang shook his head slightly and pointed to the exit sign on the other side of the hall.
“I’ll count to three,” the voice continued, “or we’ll open fire.”
"1!"
Cheng Hai suddenly pressed a button on his belt.
All the emergency lights installed on the outside of the submersible turned on, and the bright light temporarily blinded the intruder.
"Run!" Cheng Hai shouted, pushing Yu Yang as they swam toward the side door.
The shockwave from the pulse gun created visible ripples in the water, grazing past Yu Yang's shoulder and making him dizzy.
They swam desperately through the narrow passage, with the enemy hot on their heels.
"Turn right ahead!" Cheng Hai pointed out. "There should be an emergency exit there!"
As they rounded the bend, they indeed saw an upward-sloping pipe with a circular hatch at the end.
Cheng Hai quickly operated the control panel, but the door remained motionless.
"Damn it! We need electricity to start!"
Yu Yang turned around and saw that the pursuers had appeared at the end of the passage.
Cheng Hai suddenly took out a small device from his equipment bag.
“An EMP jammer,” he explained briefly, “will temporarily disable their equipment, but it will affect ours too. Get ready to swim!”
Before Yu Yang could respond, Cheng Hai activated the device.
In an instant, all the lights went out, including the displays in their helmets.
In the completely dark water, Yu Yang felt Cheng Hai grab his arm and pull him upstream.
They fumbled for the manual opening mechanism of the hatch and turned it with all their might.
The pressure of the seawater made the process extremely difficult, but eventually, the hatch loosened a little.
Cheng Hai rammed his shoulder into the gap, finally creating a narrow opening that was just big enough for someone to pass through.
The two squeezed through the opening and entered a vertical shaft.
A faint light could be seen above—that was the direction of the sea.
But they had already swum several hundred meters and their oxygen reserves were running low.
Yu Yang felt a burning sensation in his lungs and his limbs became heavy.
Just when he was about to give up, a hand grabbed his wetsuit collar and pulled him up.
Cheng Hai's face appeared unusually resolute in the dim light. He pointed to the spare oxygen tank behind him, indicating that Yu Yang should use it.
When they finally broke through the water, Yu Yang was panting heavily, almost choking on water.
They were on the roof of a half-submerged building, surrounded by the open ocean, with no sign of the "Dolphin".
"The communicator is broken," Cheng Hai said, panting. "We need to find a way to send a signal."
Just then, the water suddenly began to churn.
Three black figures emerged from the water, pulse guns aimed at them.
"Game over," the lead diver said, removing his mask to reveal a scarred face. "Tell us everything you saw down there, and maybe we'll be left with a decent burial."
Yu Yang and Cheng Hai stood back to back, forced to the edge of the roof.
Yu Yang's mind raced as he searched for a way to escape.
"Who do you work for?" he tried to stall for time. "When did the Eye of the Deep become interested in pre-existing technology?"
The scarred man sneered: "You think only floating cities are searching for a way to save humanity? We have our own patrons too."
He raised his weapon and aimed it at Yu Yang's chest.
At this critical moment, a blinding beam of light descended from the sky, accompanied by the deafening roar of an engine.
An aircraft marked with the insignia of the New Atlantis security forces hovered above them.
"Put down your weapons! This is the final warning!" The voice from the loudspeaker was like heavenly music.
Scarface cursed and fired two shots at the aircraft, but the pulses had no effect on the armored aircraft.
A security forces sniper shot him in the shoulder, and the other two, seeing the danger, quickly submerged into the water and disappeared.
As the rope was lowered, safety personnel quickly pulled Yu Yang and Cheng Hai onto the aircraft.
In the cockpit, Yu Yang was surprised to see Xiao Lin's face.
"Why are you here?" he asked weakly.
“Communication suddenly dropped after you descended,” Kobayashi explained. “I immediately contacted the security forces. Engineer Cheng’s ‘Dolphin’ has an automatic distress beacon, and we were able to track its location.”
During the aircraft's return journey, Yu Yang looked out the window at the boundless ocean below, and his heart sank.
The secret hidden in the deep sea, the discovery that could be key to humanity's future, has now fallen into the hands of dangerous elements.
Cheng Hai seemed to understand his thoughts and patted him on the shoulder: "Don't worry, old friend. We know the location and can organize a stronger team to go back."
Yu Yang nodded, but the unease in his heart lingered.
Scarface's words echoed in his mind—"We also have our own sponsors."
Who would be interested in genetic experiments from a pre-existing civilization? Why did the Eye of the Deep Sea find that location so precisely?
Upon returning to the research institute, Yu Yang immediately reported his discovery to the Floating City Council.
Speaker Mori—a white-haired former naval admiral—looked grave after hearing the story.
"Dr. Yu, are you sure the organism in the container is a product of human genetic modification?"
“I can’t be 100% certain,” Yu Yang admitted, “further research is needed. But that facility is indeed a gene pool from a pre-civilization, and its preservation is remarkably good.”
Morrie exchanged glances with several members of parliament.
