Chapter 145 The Attacker
Chapter 145 The Attacker
Why did you call us here?
In a dimly lit building, three students stood in an empty space, each with a different expression.
The tall boy leaning against the wall was toying with a dagger in his hand. Two other girls had just entered the room. One girl was clearly angry, while the other wore a cold smile.
"You should know we need to keep a low profile for a while, right?" the angry girl asked the boy.
“Of course I know. Do you think I would call you here for no reason, Pique?” Reina stood up and replied, “The target isn’t dead.”
Pique's anger turned to surprise, his eyes widening as he tried to process the meaning of those words. "What do you mean by saying he's not dead? Our plan executed so perfectly! There's no way he could have survived."
Reina continued toying with the dagger and nodded. "I know we did a good job."
They were indeed well-prepared. Before carrying out the mission, they thoroughly investigated the target's background and potential skills, prepared all the necessary tools, and everything proceeded according to plan; the target was under their control.
However, an unexpected event occurred.
"Clearly, we underestimated him; he somehow survived. Do you remember that shining light in the dungeon? I think something happened then."
After he finished speaking, the three fell silent. They understood the information and its potential consequences.
The second girl, Anne, interjected with a sneer: "It seems my dear Morse is much tougher than we thought, and perhaps he's more interesting than he appears." Her tone was light, even tinged with excitement, completely out of place with the tense atmosphere.
“Shut up!” Pick snapped. “This is no time for jokes!” Her panic began to show, and she said in a trembling voice, “If he’s still alive, he’ll expose everything we’ve done! We can’t let that happen!”
Reina approached Pique, his expression serious. "This is why I called you here. We need to regroup and revise our plans. This time, there can be no mistakes."
His gaze shifted between Pique and Anne. "You both know what will happen if we fail."
A heavy atmosphere settled over the situation, and everyone fell silent.
They were never prepared for this situation. How could they have imagined something unexpected happening when they were plotting to assassinate the weakest student in the academy?
But now, this arrogance has cost them dearly.
In the tense silence, Annie's cold laugh vanished, but Pique's panic remained. Even the most insane person knew what fate awaited them once their relationship with the devil was exposed.
Reina took control of the conversation, pacing back and forth as he spoke in a steady tone: "We need to reassess the situation. Morse being alive has changed everything. We can no longer underestimate him."
Anne leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "So, what's the plan now? We can't act rashly without understanding his capabilities."
Pique regained some composure and added, "And this time we have to be even more careful. We can't attract any attention. The last thing we want is for the Academy to get involved."
Reina nodded in agreement, while letting out a bitter sigh. "I didn't want the academy to get involved either, but it's too late now. They should already realize that some of the students who entered the dungeon are demon contractors."
Reiner showed his smartwatch, on which was displayed a message from the college's investigation team requesting that Reiner cooperate with the investigation.
“We might even have to abandon the mission and run away. With so many eyes watching, it will be very difficult to complete the mission.”
Pike's eyes widened with worry, and he blurted out, "Then where are we going? The organization won't let us go. We're already too deeply involved. The only way out is to complete the mission as soon as possible and then leave the academy during the holidays. That's our only way out."
Anne paused for a moment, then spoke seriously, "Pike is right. We can't escape the organization. If we can complete the mission, perhaps we can still have some value. We must now focus on dealing with Morse. Figure out what he knows and use it. We can't afford to fail again."
Reina nodded reluctantly. "Alright, we'll stick to the original plan, but we must be more careful and avoid any mistakes. We also need to figure out what happened in the underground city. What that light triggered might be the key to Morse's survival."
Pique's face was etched with frustration and anxiety, unable to suppress her resentment. "That Morse is just an orphan who got lucky; how could he possibly stand up to us..."
Just then, a soft, muffled sound echoed through the empty room, accompanied by the sounds of wind and splashing liquid.
Before Pique could even finish her sentence, she felt a sharp pain as something pierced her forehead, splattering blood everywhere.
Then, one bullet after another pierced her body.
In just one second, Pique collapsed to the ground, severely injured.
"Ok?"
The first to react was Reina, who noticed the bloodstains beneath Pique.
"We've been attacked!"
He shouted, quickly assessing the firing angle. From the shadows, the unseen attacker continued firing.
Reina immediately activated his demonic power, a dark aura enveloping him as he sought cover, his gaze sweeping over the source of the attack.
"bullet?"
He looked at the fallen bullets and muttered to himself. Bullets weren't commonly used weapons; for the strong, guns had very limited power.
"Hehehe... Is that you?"
As Anne laughed, she quickly sought cover while simultaneously drawing her terrifying long-handled scythe.
The glint in her eyes showed that she was ready for battle, and the maniacal smile from before returned to her face.
"Who are you!"
Reiner shouted, trying to provoke a response from the attackers. He had found cover, and so had Anne.
silence.
There was no response, only an eerie silence remaining in the room.
'How did he bypass our radar?' he wondered to himself.
They installed security measures at the entrance, which was one of the main reasons why the Federation failed to completely eradicate the demon followers.
'No, now is not the time to think about these things.'
Reina forced himself to concentrate, his gaze falling on the bloodstains beneath Pique's severe injuries.
We can't delay any longer.
The sound of bullets stopped, and darkness enveloped the room.
Where's the light?
He suddenly realized that all the lights were off.
They were smashed.
Reina looked up at the ceiling and saw that all the light bulbs had been broken. Although it was pitch black all around, as a demon-human, his senses were exceptionally sharp, allowing him to clearly perceive everything around him.
He could hear and perceive everything clearly. However, he still had no information about the attackers.
'Damn it!'
Realizing that time was ticking away, Reina quickly got up and walked toward Pique.
Suddenly, my eyes lit up.
A fleeting light caught his eye, and he immediately sensed the magical fluctuations on the ceiling.
'not good! '
Although he sensed the danger, it was too late.
Whoosh!
Guided by magic, an arrow flew forth, this time containing even greater energy.
It was an arrow enveloped in blue-gold magic, and the enormous energy fluctuations made Reina feel threatened.
boom!
The arrow exploded near Reina, the shockwave throwing him away and causing him to stagger back a few steps.
boom!
Losing his balance, Reina crashed into the wall. The demon armor absorbed some of the impact, but he still felt disoriented and briefly lost his sense of direction.
"Hehehe! I've finally found you."
At that moment, he realized that he was not alone.
Anne seized the opportunity and immediately rushed towards the direction from which the arrows had come, her scythe gleaming dangerously as she prepared to strike down the unseen enemy.
Whoosh!
Her scythe sliced through the air, aiming at the elusive enemy. However, the weapon struck nothing as it swung through the air.
"What's going on?" Anne exclaimed, her eyes scanning the darkness rapidly. She looked around but found no trace of the enemy.
Whoosh!
Almost simultaneously, another arrow flew in, as if the attacker had anticipated Anne's actions.
prick!
The arrow struck Anne squarely in the shoulder. Although this arrow wasn't as powerful as before, she still felt a sharp pain and barely noticed its presence.
"Uh……"
Anne gritted her teeth, a cold smile still playing on her lips.
boom!
Anne landed steadily on the ground.
Reina recovered from the explosion and managed to regain his footing. He quickly activated his demonic power, creating a protective barrier around himself.
“Annie, what happened?” he called out urgently, his eyes scanning the dark room.
“I…I don’t know,” Anne replied, a hint of frustration in her voice. She was puzzled by the enemy’s sudden disappearance.
Whoosh! Pfft!
However, in the ensuing silence, they heard the sound of liquid splashing and a muffled thud.
"Uh……"
They quickly turned their attention to the source of the sound and saw Pique lying on the ground, badly wounded, with another arrow piercing her heart...
"Do not……"
And the arrow was glowing.
boom!
Another explosion occurred, shaking the entire building.
