Chapter 34 There's Food Now

Chapter 34 There's Food Now

"Help!"

"Please, let me go!"

"Ha ha ha ha",

……

Wang Wu whispered in Wen Yuxia's ear, "Those two women outside look like Cuihua and Cuiping from the village chief's family."

Wen Yuxia listened carefully several times before she could make out what Wang Wushi was saying in her ear amidst the crying and laughter outside.

The madmen were not far from their hiding place, so Wang Wu dared not speak, not even in a whisper. Helpless, she could only whisper repeatedly in Wen Yuxia's ear.

Wen Yuxia bent down and took two steps forward to the hollow. Parting the weeds, she used the moonlight to observe the situation outside. Two tall, burly thugs each grabbed a petite girl.

The madman's armor had been removed, and the girl's clothes were torn to shreds. Her cries sounded weak and powerless amidst the madman's laughter.

Perhaps seeing no way to call for help, one of the girls suddenly shouted sharply, "I'll fight you to the death!" and then bit the madman's wrist.

"Ah!" the thug yelled, throwing the girl away. She slammed against a tree trunk like a rag doll before falling to the ground.

Seeing this, another girl cried out, "Sister!"

Watching the madman draw his broadsword and walk coldly towards the tree, Wen Yuxia, with tears in her eyes, slowly retreated to her previous spot and gently sat down on the ground.

She silently said, "I'm sorry!" She had family to protect and couldn't possibly go out and fight the madmen for two girls she didn't know.

Wang Wushi and the others all looked grim, but none of them dared to utter a sound.

Several children, including Wen Yunhong, had their ears stuffed with rags and their mouths gagged by the adults as soon as the madman appeared outside.

About half an hour later, the girl's cries subsided, and the two thugs outside left satisfied. Wen Yuxia never heard the girl's voice again.

Wen Yuxia glanced out through the opening to confirm that the madman had left, and said softly, "Grandma, should I go out and check on those two girls?"

Wang Wu slowly shook her head: "Da Ya, don't go. In these chaotic times, it's good enough if you can even protect your own family."

Whether the two madmen were truly leaving or feigning it, Wang Wu didn't know. She didn't want to expose their hiding place for the sake of the two girls outside who were certain to die.

"Okay, you guys rest, I'll keep watch," Wen Yuxia said softly, leaning against the alcove.

Wang Dazhu lowered his voice: "Da Ya, you keep watch for the first half of the night, and I'll take over for the second half."

“Yes,” Wen Yuxia nodded in agreement.

Sunlight filtered through the weeds and into the hollow, causing Wang Wushi and the others to open their eyes.

"Da Ya, why didn't you wake me up?" He'd agreed to keep watch for the rest of the night, but he'd slept until dawn. Wang Dazhu asked somewhat awkwardly.

Wen Yuxia said nonchalantly, "It's alright, I can catch up on sleep during the day. You wait here while I go out and take a look."

Wen Yuxia first surveyed the surrounding area, then placed the two dead bodies together, and took out the pile of soil she had dug out when she was digging the burial pit to hide in the previous day, and used it to make a mound for the two bodies.

He walked back to the hollow and said to Wang Wushi and the others, "It's safe outside for now, everyone come out for some fresh air."

He then told Wang Wushi, "Grandma, return to the hollow immediately after the time it takes for an incense stick to burn. The madmen haven't left the forest yet. I've already filled these two water bags, and there are still steamed buns in the satchel; I'll have Hong'er get them for you later."

Two bulging water pouches were handed directly to Wang Wu's hands, while the satchel was slung over Wen Yunhong's shoulder. The tattered cloth strips had already been moved into his spatial storage, and the satchel was filled with steamed buns made from two kinds of flour, making it a full satchel.

"I understand. Daya, you should sleep for a while. We'll discuss it again when you wake up."

Wen Yuxia slept until sunset. When she opened her eyes, everyone was quietly sitting in the hollow, resting with their eyes closed. Wang Dazhu sat at the edge of the hollow, observing the situation outside through the weeds.

"Uncle, is anyone outside?" Wen Yuxia asked softly.

"Not now," Wang Dazhu said with a smile as he turned around.

In the morning, after emptying their stomachs, they returned to the hollow. Wen Yunhong distributed steamed buns to everyone, two for adults and one for children. Wang Wu also gave one of her water pouches to Wang An.

After they had eaten and drunk their fill, Wang Ping instructed Wang Dazhu to keep watch while the others continued to rest.

Wang Dazhu had been guarding the concave opening and had seen several groups of people pass by, as well as seven or eight barbarians on horseback galloping past.

Wen Yuxia pondered for a moment and said, "Uncle, I'm going out for a bit and will fetch some water on my way back."

"Da Ya, it's not safe outside, come back soon," Wang Dazhu thought Wen Yuxia went out to empty her stomach, and his move inward was to let Wen Yuxia relieve herself on the spot outside the depression.

After finishing the steamed buns in her bag, Wen Yuxia didn't plan to take any more out. While Wang Wu and the others weren't searching for food in the woods, she needed to go out and retrieve some food from her spatial storage to pretend she'd found it in the forest.

Before leaving the depression, Wen Yuxia slung her satchel over her shoulder again. There was still plenty of water in her water pouch; she could use the satchel as cover to take out two more bags of water later.

It must be said that Wen Yuxia was quite lucky; there were two chestnut trees in the woods. She turned around and went back to the hollow, calling over the eight Wang Dazhu brothers and the three Wang Yishu brothers.

"Uncle, you guys pack up, I'll go find some bags," Wen Yuxia said, then used her light-footed skill to quickly leave.

She had quite a few cloth bags and burlap sacks in her storage space. When Wen Yuxia returned from her walk, she was carrying one bag in her hand and another on her shoulder.

"Uncle, these cloth bags were picked up on the main road, perfect for filling our chestnut bags," Wen Yuxia tossed the bags in her hand to Wang Dazhu. The bags contained fifteen cloth bags.

He then put the burlap sack on his shoulder to the ground and said mysteriously, "Uncle, I found a sack of grain behind a big rock. I opened it and checked; it's rice."

Wang Dazhu was stunned. The sack was full of rice, and it looked to weigh at least seventy or eighty pounds. What incredible luck Da Ya had!

"Second brother, hurry up and carry the grain back. The rest of you, go back and pack the chestnuts into cloth bags, separating the unshelled ones from the shelled ones."

Before Wen Yuxia returned, Wang Dazhu and the others finished picking chestnuts and started peeling off the thorny shells. When Wen Yuxia returned with a cloth bag, Wang Dazhu instructed his brothers to put all the chestnuts into the bag and carry them to the depression.

Looking at the bag of rice and seven bags of chestnuts, Wang Wushi choked up and said, "We have food! We have food!"

Abandoning their food and belongings and running away saddened her for quite some time. For the past two days, they had relied on the steamed buns in Wen Yuxia's bag to stave off hunger. The food in front of them, if eaten sparingly, could last them a month.

Wen Yuxia laughed and said, "Grandma, don't cry. Let the uncles dig deeper and find a place to store the grain first!"

Wang Wu quickly called everyone out of the depression and sent Wang Dazhu and Wang Erzhu in to dig.

"Hey, these two hoes look like ours," Wen Yuxia said, handing him the hoes to dig a depression in the ground when they escaped here earlier. It was dark, and Wang Dazhu hadn't seen the hoes clearly.

Wen Yuxia covered her mouth and chuckled, "I grabbed a hoe and a sickle when I ran, the sickle is still inside."

As she fled, she happened to be standing next to the cart. Considering that it would be inconvenient for her to go into the mountains to forage for wild vegetables without any farm tools, she deliberately stored the hoe and sickle on the cart into her spatial storage.

Before leaving the cave, Wen Yuxia placed the sickle where she had been sleeping.
