Chapter 177 The War Between Humans and Werewolves
Chapter 177 The War Between Humans and Werewolves
The black alpha wolf stopped howling softly, and Wen Yuxia assumed the pack was heading towards the village behind the mountain. She secretly stretched her hand out into the air, making a preparatory gesture, ready to fly into the wolf pack herself.
The wolves remained seated. Wen Yuxia was puzzled; she didn't understand why they were sitting there. So she stretched her hand out into the air, signaling to Nan Yi and the others to halt their attack.
Soon, Wen Yuxia heard the sound of leaping and landing in the distance. She realized that the wolf pack that had raided the small mountain village at night was not just one pack; this pack was waiting for their allies.
The green-glowing eyes approached from afar. The black alpha wolf beneath the tree quickly stepped forward, nuzzling affectionately against the smaller, snow-white wolf running in front.
The white wolf's companion crouched on the ground, watching the white wolf and black wolf running together amicably. Wen Yuxia immediately recognized the white wolf as the leader of the pack.
The couple each managed a wolf pack; they were really something else! They had arranged to meet here tonight and bring their packs down the mountain for a feast.
Wen Yuxia's lips twitched uncontrollably a few times. She stretched her hands into the air, her right hand giving the attack command, and her left hand telling Nan Yi and the others to be careful.
Taking out her bow and arrows, Wen Yuxia calmly drew the bowstring taut and shot an arrow that struck a wolf squarely between the eyebrows. A wolf fell, and then, with a series of swift movements, Nan Yi and the others unleashed their own arrows upon the pack of wolves.
The two alpha wolves, who were just cuddling, quickly separated and hid in their respective camps. Howls erupted from their mouths, loud yet tinged with a mournful chill.
The two packs of wolves quickly separated at the howl of their alpha. The white wolf led its men back, while the black wolf directed its men to split into five groups and rush towards the hiding places of Wen Yuxia, Bei Er, Nan Yi, Nan Er, and Nan San.
Wen Yuxia fired rapidly while sneering, "Fools, what are you doing down here if you can't climb trees? Coming to your deaths? This princess will grant your wish."
Soon, Wen Yuxia realized that she had underestimated the alpha wolf's wisdom and the pack's fearlessness.
The wolves swarmed to the foot of the tree to create a path for their companions, using their own corpses to build a trail so that their comrades could leap up the tree using their bodies as stepping stones.
More and more corpses lay beneath the tree. Wolves had already leaped onto the branches and were pouncing on Wen Yuxia and the others who were drawing their bows and shooting arrows. Wen Yuxia threw her bow and arrows back into her spatial storage, then leaped down from the tree, sword in hand.
Seeing Wen Yuxia wreaking havoc among the wolves, Nan Yi and the others abandoned their bows and arrows, leaped down from the trees, and engaged the wolves in hand-to-hand combat, using either broadswords or fists.
While fighting the wolves, Wen Yuxia kept an eye on the white wolf's movements. As expected, the white wolf didn't disappoint her, leading its pack of wolves silently closer.
"Watch out for those wolves behind us," Wen Yuxia warned.
The white wolf did not join the fight; it led its pack swiftly across the battleground and charged down the mountain.
After the white wolf and his men left, the black wolf raised his head and howled loudly at the sky. The black wolf's men then divided into two organized groups.
One team continued fighting Wen Yuxia and her group, while the other team followed the white wolves. Wen Yuxia was getting anxious, worried that Nan Si and the others wouldn't be able to handle so many wolves.
With fewer than fifty wolves remaining, she decided to deal with the alpha wolf first. Looking around but unable to find the black alpha, Wen Yuxia, in desperation, said, "North Second Wolf, go down the mountain and tell the villagers. South First Wolf, South Second Wolf, and South Third Wolf, move closer to me."
In fact, the villagers got up as soon as they heard the howling of the wolves. After settling the elderly, women, and children in the village, the village chief led the able-bodied men, carrying torches, hoes, machetes, and wooden sticks, to the end of the village.
"Sir, do you need our help?" The village chief asked worriedly, looking at the group fighting the wolves halfway up the mountain.
Although he was nervous, he wasn't afraid. The wolf pack had come down the mountain more than once, and they had experience dealing with them. As long as they held out until dawn, the wolves would leave on their own.
Bei Yi asked somewhat uncertainly, "Aren't you afraid of wolves?" The village chief calmly told Bei Yi that they had a way to deal with the wolf pack, adding that wolves were easier to handle than bandits.
At this moment, Bei Er, covered in blood, rushed down the mountain. Bei Yi exclaimed in surprise, "You're injured?" Bei Er nodded slightly, panting heavily, and said, "There were too many wolves, probably three hundred. We couldn't possibly kill them all..."
Villager A's voice was filled with terror: "Normally, a pack of wolves that come down the mountain to find food is only twenty or thirty. What kind of life do we have if over three hundred wolves come down together?"
Mountain bandits came to the village, burning, killing, and looting. Smelling the blood, wolves also came to take advantage of the chaos. Suddenly, over three hundred wolves arrived—it seemed they were going to wipe out the village!
The village chief was enraged. He was determined to fight them. He raised his torch and shouted, "Folks, come with me! The adults are fighting off the wolves on the mountain; we can't stand idly by!"
"Fight off the wolves and protect our home," the village chief's eldest son voiced his support for the chief's decision.
"Drive away the wolves and protect our homes!" Inspired by the emotions of the village chief and his son, the villagers shouted and ran up the mountain. Bei Yi and the others couldn't stop the impulsive villagers.
Seeing the villagers rushing up the mountain in a chaotic manner, Bei Yi said helplessly, "Don't just stand there like idiots, let's go help too."
As it turned out, the village chief wasn't lying; they did have a method for dealing with the wolf pack. They worked in groups of four: two held torches, while the other two, taking advantage of the wolves' moments of avoidance of the flames, raised their hoes and axes to strike the wolves.
With the villagers joining the fight, the pressure on Nan Si and the others was immediately relieved. Bei Er, wielding her longsword, moved among the wolves, intervening whenever a villager was outmatched.
The white wolf appeared behind Nan Qi without his noticing, its green eyes fixed on him menacingly. Taking advantage of Nan Qi's momentary lapse in attention, the white wolf swiftly pounced on him.
Upon hearing the whistling wind, Nan Qi instinctively rolled over, thinking he had escaped the white wolf's attack. Looking back, he saw the wolf's fangs right in front of him.
Without a second thought, Nan Qi raised his left arm to block the wolf's fangs, and punched it in the belly with his right fist. The white wolf howled and flew backward, its bloodied flesh falling from its mouth.
Nan Qi glanced at his injured left arm, said nothing, drew his longsword, and charged towards the white wolf. Sensing the killing intent emanating from Nan Qi, the white wolf dodged while howling incessantly; its howls were short and urgent.
Hearing the white wolf's howl, the black wolf fighting Wen Yuxia showed anxiety on its face. Seeing this human-like expression on the wolf's face, Wen Yuxia was surprised and increased the speed of her attack.
The black wolf nimbly dodged Wen Yuxia, but did not retaliate. Instead, it turned and ran down the mountain. Wen Yuxia was unwilling to let it go down the mountain to save the white wolf, so she followed the black wolf and rushed down the mountain.
