Chapter 870 Laws
Chapter 870 Laws
"What are you thinking about so intently?"
Ange's voice came from behind, "Huh? Candles?"
Anjie raised an eyebrow at the burning candle on the wall. "Lingling, did you put that on?"
“…No.” He Lingling sighed, then quickly whispered her guess to An Jie.
"...That's probably it, or maybe I'm overthinking it."
He Lingling said.
After changing her clothes, Anjie stretched her almost fully recovered back and looked sharply at the candle.
"Could a burning candle be a warning sign?"
Anjie's voice was low, carrying a hint of cold killing intent, "So if the candles burn out again tonight, will that thing outside the door still come to harass us?"
"Very likely." He Lingling nodded, ignoring the word "harassment" An Jie mentioned, her brows furrowed.
"We don't know what it is yet, so we're in a passive position."
“And Shi Jiu…” He Lingling sighed, thinking of the seemingly well-behaved but actually unpredictable and capricious boy.
"Based on my understanding of Shi Jiu, he's probably already in the kitchen with Thumbelina. We need to follow him; we can't let him out of our sight for too long."
“…” Anjie also thought of this and nodded, “Then let’s go out first.”
After finishing their conversation, the two quickly tidied up and gently pushed open the door.
The underground passage outside the door was still dark, with only the snoring of an old field mouse coming from behind the room where the old field mouse was.
The pungent, rotten smell in the cave seemed even stronger than last night.
Almost simultaneously, the door to the next room creaked open.
Chen Yi and Xu Han came out. The four of them met and saw wariness and lingering fatigue in each other's eyes.
"Sister An!"
Xu Han saw An Jie and exclaimed in surprise.
"Hmm," Anjie replied briefly, her gaze sweeping over Chen Yi, not missing his serious expression, and she raised an eyebrow:
"You saw the candles too?"
Chen Yi nodded solemnly: "It ignited automatically, without any warning. This place... is more bizarre than we thought."
"Where are Shi Jiu and Thumbelina?" He Lingling asked.
“It seems like they went that way,” Xu Han, who had been listening intently to the wooden door, immediately pointed in one direction of the passage. “I heard Shi Jiu say that they were going to make breakfast for Grandma Field Mouse.”
“…Let’s go too.” Anjie made a quick decision. “Stay together so we can look out for each other. There are some strange things in the cave, and it’s too dangerous to go alone.”
None of the four objected, and they said no more, quickly and carefully moving forward in the direction Xu Han pointed out.
The passage was winding, and the earthen walls were damp and cold.
As they walked, they could faintly hear conversations and the soft clattering of pots and pans coming from ahead.
Soon, a slightly larger hole, which had been carved out to resemble a kitchen, appeared before them—right next to the main room.
Yu Shijiu leaned against the door, looking around the kitchen with a casual gaze—some rough earthenware pots, stone cooking utensils, and some root plants and potatoes whose original form was no longer discernible, piled up in the corner.
Meanwhile, Thumbelina was struggling to move a wooden spoon bigger than her head, trying to stir a pot of paste on a small earthen stove.
She looked as usual, but there seemed to be a hint of... stiffness? Or perhaps, a kind of numbness from being too focused.
Hearing footsteps behind her, Yu Shijiu turned around and saw the group of four. A bright, joyful smile immediately spread across her face.
"Oh, Sister An, you're all awake? Perfect timing, dinner will be ready soon."
